A MEXICAN COSTURERO or JOYERO
An octagonal jewelry/knitting box (or “Costurero”) veneered with tortoiseshell, mother-of-pearl and engraved bone.
The inside is red and gold painted.
Mexico, 18th century.

Very few of these costurero's have survived. It is thought these boxes were made in Guatemala, and exported towards Mexico and Peru.
A similar box is in a private Spanish collection ; and an other in the Lacma Collection (LA, USA).
