Pair of Eger relief marquetry panels

A MATCHED PAIR OF EGER RELIEF MARQUETRY PANELS

A matched pair of octogonal Eger reliefs with the depictions of Gaius Mucius Scaevola and Horatius Cocles. Gaius Mucius Scaevola was a personality of early Roman history, who is said to have saved the city from a siege in 508 BC. Horatius Cocles was a national hero of Roman mythology, who is said to have defended a bridge leading to Rome against the Etruscans all by himself. Attributed to the Master with the Ornamented background ; cabinet maker and inlay artist of the 17th century, active in and around Eger.

Carved reliefs from Eger are part of the most significant and independent contributions in the tradition of the art of marquetry : the carved and inlaid reliefs were a special form of marquetry which had been developed in the city of Cheb (today part of the Czech Republic).

Very good condition.
Eger (G) formerly Cheb, 17th century.
Dimensions : 37,5 x 33,5 cm & 39,5 x 30,5 cm.
