AN EXCEPTIONAL FRENCH BRONZE MORTAR
An exceptional French bronze mortar with medallions, caryatids and fleurs-de-lis, Paris, dated 1692.
The frieze of this important mortar bearing the name 'I. Cavelier' and the date '1692'. The mortar relief decorated with elegant caryatids, fleur-de-lis and four medallions, representing king Louis XIV, Cosimo III de Medici (Grand Duke of Tuscany), his wife Marguerite d'Orleans and Bacchus sitting on a wine barrel.
Attributed to Nicolas de la Paix (1645/9 - 1722)
